Unsaturated Alcohols as Chain-Transfer Agents in Olefin Polymerization: Synthesis of Aldehyde End-Capped Oligomers and Polymers
Han, Xing-Wang,Daugulis, Olafs,Brookhart, Maurice
, p. 15431 - 15437 (2020)
Palladium diimine-catalyzed polymerization of olefins using unsaturated alcohols as chain-transfer agents has been demonstrated. The reaction affords aldehyde end-capped polymers whose molecular weight can be tuned by varying the ratio of olefin/chain-transfer agent. Notably, >95% efficient end capping with aldehyde can be achieved under optimized conditions. This end-capping procedure is a rare example of introducing a highly reactive and versatile terminal functionality in polyolefin chains using a functional group-tolerant late metal catalyst. The reactivity of these end-capped polymers is illustrated here via functionalization with dyes to yield colored, hydrocarbon-soluble polyolefin derivatives.

An efficient method to synthesize novel highly sterically hindered acenaphthene-based α-diimine ligands bearing bulky diarylmethyl moiety was achieved by two-step reactions. These reactions could be carried out on a scale of 100 g with no chromatography involved. On the basis of this method, a series of novel highly sterically hindered acenaphthene-based α-diimine Pd(II) and Ni(II) complexes, imidazolium precursors and the corresponding NHCs-metal complexes were also successfully synthesized. These novel complexes can offer great potential for metal-catalyzed polymerizations and organic reactions.

To achieve efficient palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction under mild reaction conditions with the flexible steric bulk strategy, a series of Pd-PEPPSI (PEPPSI: pyridine-enhanced precatalyst preparation, stabilization, and initiation) complexes C1-C6 were synthesized and characterized, in which unsymmetric flexible steric bulk was introduced on the N-aryl of ancenaphthyl skeleton. These well-defined palladium complexes were found to be excellent precatalysts for Buchwald-Hartwig amination of aryl chlorides with amines in air. The electronic effect of the Pd-PEPPSI complexes and the effect of ancillary pyridine ligands were evaluated, among which complex C3 exhibited the most efficiency. It was demonstrated that the cross-coupling products were obtained in excellent yields in the presence of 0.5-0.1 mol % palladium loading. A wide range of aryl- and heteroaryl chlorides as well as various amines were compatible. The oxidative addition of aryl chlorides is revealed to be the rate-determining step in the catalytic cycle. The catalytic activity can be enhanced by introducing electron-donating groups to the Pd-PEPPSI complexes. This type of Pd-PEPPSI precatalyst showed the most efficiency reported to date for the challenging C-N cross-coupling reactions requiring no anhydrous and inert atmosphere protections, suggesting flexible steric bulk as a promising catalyst design strategy.

Six ferrous chloride complexes ((Ar-BIANX)FeCl2: Ar = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl (Dipp), X = F (1), Cl (2), Me (3); Ar = mesityl (Mes), X = F (4), Cl (5), Me (6)) supported by sterically bulky asymmetric bis(arylimino)acenaphthene (BIAN) ligands were prepared through the treatment of anhydrous FeCl2 with the corresponding ligands in a molar ratio of 1:1. The compounds were characterized by X-ray crystallography, IR, NMR and electrochemical methods. This series of complexes represents rare examples of structurally characterized iron compounds bearing asymmetric bidentate BIAN ligands. The complexes were tested for catalytic hydrosilylation of aldehydes and ketones at room temperature, and moderate to good yields of alcohol derivatives were obtained after hydrolysis workup.

experimental part, p. 2418 - 2424 (2011/06/21)
A series of 2,6-dibenzhydryl-N-(2-phenyliminoacenaphthylenylidene)-4- methylbenzenamines (L1-L5) and the nickel(II) dibromide complexes thereof (C1-C5) were synthesized and fully characterized. The molecular structures of representative complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and revealed a distorted-pyramidal geometry at nickel. All nickel(II) procatalysts exhibited very high activity for the polymerization of ethylene, with activities as high as the range of 107 g of PE (mol of Ni)-1 h -1.
