Oxidation of 5αH,4,6,11βH-eudesman-6,13-diol (6) with various Cr(VI) reagents has been studied.With pyridinium chlorochromate, the stable lactol (2) has been isolated for the first time along with the keto alcohol (9) and santanolide 'a' (4).All other oxidising reagents used invariably furnish 4 and 9 as the reaction product.
