Nitrofuran arylpyrazolines: synthesis and antibacterial properties

New 3-aryl-4,5-dihydro-5-(5-nitro-2-furyl)-1H-pyrazoles were synthesized by condensing hydrazine or methylhydrazine with various nitrofuran arylpropenones, and their antibacterial activity was evaluated in vitro. The prepared compounds were inactive against Gram-negative bacteria tested. However, nine out of eleven assayed derivatives showed slight activity against Streptococcus faecalis, and to a lesser degree against Staphylococcus aureus, the most interesting compounds being the N-acetyl and N-formyl 4,5-dihydro-3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-5-(5-nitro-2-furyl)-1H-pyrazoles.
