The basicity of 4- and 4'-substituted α-fluoro- and α,β-difluorochalcones was investigated by UV and IR spectroscopy.The introduction of fluorine at the α position leads to a decrease of approximately 2.0-2.5 orders of magnitude in the basicity of the chalcones.On the average α,β-difluorochalcones are 0.5 order of magnitude less basic than the corresponding α-fluorochalcones.The presence of a fluorine atom at the α position has practically no effect on the transition of the electronic events of the substituents to the carbonyl group during protonation.A mechanism of hydrolysis is proposed on the basis of data on the kinetics of the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of α,β-difluorovinylcarbonyl compounds and the effect of substituents.
