The change in ΔG0 for the equilibrium (1) (2), R=t-Bu, has been measured for the gas phase and a range of solvents, thus providing a direct test of solvation theories.It is shown that reaction-field theory gives a quantitative explanation of the observed results, with the exception of the anomalous hydroxylic and aromatic solvents.
