2-Octyl cyanoacrylate (Dermabond) is a fast-setting topical skin adhesive intended to close easily approximated skin edges of wounds from surgical incisions, including punctures from minimally invasive surgery and simple, thoroughly cleansed, trauma-induced lacerations. It may be used in conjunction with, but not in place of, subcuticular sutures. It is contraindicated for use on any wounds with evidence of active infection, areas under high skin tension, mucocutaneous surfaces, or skin regularly exposed to body fluids. Patients with formaldehyde allergies may react to this topical solution.

A method for producing a cyanoacrylate monomer, comprising the steps of (a) reacting cyanoacetate and formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde in the presence of a base or amine base catalyst to form an α-cyanoacrylate prepolymer or oligomer mixture; (b) subjecting the α-cyanoacrylate prepolymer or oligomer mixture to a substrate having free acid, acid derivative, or free aldehyde or ketone groups to remove the catalyst and to obtain a purified α-cyanoacrylate prepolymer or oligomer; and (c) subjecting the purified α-cyanoacrylate prepolymer or oligomer to depolymerization to obtain an α-cyanoacrylate monomer.
