Naphthalenide reduction of [Mn(η6-C6H6)-(CO)3]PF 6 (4PF6) in THF at -78°C gives a solution of [Mn(η4-C6H6)(CO)3]- (3-). The η4-benzene in 3- can be protonated to give [Mn(η5-C6H7)(CO)3] (5). Attempted metathesis of 3- with PPNCI gave PPN [Mn(η4-C10H8)-(CO)3] (PPN6), established crystallographically to contain an η4-naphthalene ligand. This is activated toward protonation to give [Mn(η5-C10H9)(CO)3] (8). Labeling studies with CF3CO2D have established endo selective protonation of 3- and 6-, suggesting a metal-mediated pathway.
