α,β-Unsaturated thioamides and thioesters react with iron pentacarbonyl or diiron enneacarbonyl to form iron tricarbonyl complexes, characterized on the basis of analytical and spectral data, as well as X-ray structure determinations in two cases. These complexes undergo ligand substitution reactions with triphenylphosphine and a novel cyclization reaction with alkynes affording iron tricarbonyl complexes of cyclopentenone thioamides. An X-ray analysis of one such complex reveals that the two functionalities, bonded to the Fe(CO)3 moiety, are not conjugated to each other.
