The preparation and fluorine-19 nuclear magnetic resonance investigation of the phosphorus chlorofluorides

A simplified procedure for the preparation of phosphorus(III) chlorofluorides is given. Low temperature chlorination of the latter is used to obtain PCl4F, PCl2F3, and the new compound, PCl3F2. The pyridine adducts, C5H5N·PCl3F2 and C5H5N-PCl4F, were characterized. A F19 n.m.r. investigation shows an upfield shift in the series PClxF3-x with decreasing fluorine content and a downfield shift in the series PClxF5-x with decreasing fluorine content. The F19 shift of the pyridine adducts follows the same order as that observed in the phosphorus(V) chlorofluorides. The data are used to show that PCl4F and PCl3F2 most likely have a trigonal bipyramidal configuration similar to PCl2F3 and that the pyridine adducts are simple molecular addition compounds. The F19 shifts in the phosphorus chlorofluoride series are examined in relation to F19 data in other series. Copyright 1963 by the American Chemical Society.
