Preparation of propenoic acid derivatives

Compounds of formula I STR1 in which Ar is aryl and R1 and R2 are alkyl, are obtained by a process in which a compound of formula II STR2 where Z is a disubstituted amino group, a) is reacted with an alcohol, R2 OH, preferably under acidic conditions, to give a compound of formula III STR3 which is then dealkanolated, or b) is hydrolysed under acid conditions, to give a compound of formula IV STR4 which then alkylated. The compounds of formula I have fungicidal activity, as do many of the compounds of formula II, III and IV.
