The stereospecific synthesis of optically active (3Z,6Z,9S,10R)-cis-9,10-epoxy-3,6-heneicosadiene, the main component of the sex pheromone of the American white butterfly (Hyphantria cunea drury), was realized on the basis of tri-O-acetyl-D-galactal and its derivative (2E,4R,5R)-4,5,6-triacetoxy-2-hexenal.
