Reaction of sodium hydride with 5,11-dimethyl-2,3,8,9-tetramethoxy-11H-indenoisoquinolone in a THF-DMFA mixture in a dry argon current gave a carboanion, the treatment of which with various reagents (D2O, methyl p-toluenesulfonate, atmospheric oxygen) led to the formation of 11-deutero-5,11-dimethyl-2,3,8,9-tetramethoxy-11H-indenoisoquinolone, 5,11,11-trimethyl-2,3,8,9-tetramethoxy-11H-indenoisoquinolone, and 11-hydroxy-5,11-dimethyl-2,3,8,9-tetramethoxy-11H-indenoisoquinolone, respectively.
