The reaction of 3-oxo-1-octyne with hydrogen sulfide in the presence of sodium acetate leads to 2,4,6-tri(2-oxoheptyl)-1,3,5-trithiane and the isomeric (Z,Z)-, (Z,E)-, and (E,E)-bis(3-oxo-1-octenyl)sulfides.A mixture of linear bissulfides is obtained exclusively from 3-oxo-4-phenoxy-1-butyne under analogous conditions. The joint reaction of the acetylenic ketones, the tetrahydropyranyl (or tetrahydrofuryl) ethers of 4-hydroxy-2-R-cyclopent-2-en-1-ones, hydrogen sulfide, and potassium carbonate gives (+/-)-2R-5α,β-(2-oxoheptyl)-4,6-dithiabicyclooctan-1-ones.
