Synthesis of some new imidazole-2-thiols and their derivatives as potent antimicrobial agents

A series of novel 5-[1-substituted-5-(4-substitutedphenyl)-4,5-dihydro-1H- pyrazol-3-yl]-4-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-imidazole-2-thiols have been synthesized by cyclization of a,ss-unsaturated ketones (chalcones) with hydrazine hydrate in the presence ethanol and phenyl hydrazine, 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine, isoniazide in the presence of catalytic amount of sulphuric acid in ethanol. Structures of all these newly synthesized compounds have been confirmed by their spectral and elemental analyses. These compounds are evaluated for their antimicrobial activity. Some of these compounds show moderate antimicrobial activity as compared to the known reference drugs ciprofloxacin.
