Cyclopentane Formation from Flexible Precursors Using Samarium(II) Reagents
Aretz, Christopher D.,Escobedo, Humberto,Cowen, Bryan J.
, p. 1880 - 1884 (2018/05/09)
Three efficient methods for five-membered ring carbocycle synthesis have been developed from simple starting materials using samarium(II) reagents. A Reformatsky aldol reaction proceeded efficiently with samarium(II) iodide using lithium bromide as an additive. A new intramolecular alkylation of a samarium enolate was realized with a pendant sulfonate ester leaving group. Pinacol cyclization of a simple diketone was also demonstrated giving a diol product in high stereoselectivity. A promising lead result has been established demonstrating enantioselectivity in a chiral ligand controlled Reformatsky aldol reaction.
Base-mediated cascade rearrangements of aryl-substituted diallyl ethers
Reid, Jolene P.,McAdam, Catherine A.,Johnston, Adam J. S.,Grayson, Matthew N.,Goodman, Jonathan M.,Cook, Matthew J.
, p. 1472 - 1498 (2015/02/19)
Two base-mediated cascade rearrangement reactions of diallyl ethers were developed leading to selective [2,3]-Wittig-oxy-Cope and isomerization-Claisen rearrangements. Both diaryl and arylsilyl-substituted 1,3-substituted propenyl substrates were examined, and each exhibits unique reactivity and different reaction pathways. Detailed mechanistic and computational analysis was conducted, which demonstrated that the role of the base and solvent was key to the reactivity and selectivity observed. Crossover experiments also suggest that these reactions proceed with a certain degree of dissociation, and the mechanistic pathway is highly complex with multiple competing routes.
Catalytic ketyl-olefin cyclizations enabled by proton-coupled electron transfer

supporting information, p. 10022 - 10025 (2013/07/26)
Concerted proton-coupled electron transfer is a key mechanism of substrate activation in biological redox catalysis. However, its applications in organic synthesis remain largely unexplored. Herein, we report the development of a new catalytic protocol fo

Copper-catalyzed oxaziridine-mediated oxidation of C-H bonds
Motiwala, Hashim F.,Guelgeze, Belgin,Aube, Jeffrey
, p. 7005 - 7022 (2012/10/08)
The highly regio- and chemoselective oxidation of activated C-H bonds has been observed via copper-catalyzed reactions of oxaziridines. The oxidation proceeded with a variety of substrates, primarily comprising allylic and benzylic examples, as well as one example of an otherwise unactivated tertiary C-H bond. The mechanism of the reaction is proposed to involve single-electron transfer to the oxaziridines to generate a copper-bound radical anion, followed by hydrogen atom abstraction and collapse to products, with regeneration of the catalyst by a final single-electron transfer event. The involvement of allylic radical intermediates was supported by a radical-trapping experiment with TEMPO.

Conjugate addition of allylic groups to α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds via (η3-allyl)Fe(CO)2NO complexes
Itoh, Keiji,Nakanishi, Saburo,Otsuji, Yoshio
, p. 215 - 224 (2007/10/02)
(η3-Allyl)Fe(CO)2NO complexes undergo conjugate addition to α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds to give the corresponding δ,ε-unsaturated carbonyl compounds in good yields. The reaction of (η3-1- or 2-trimethylsiloxyallyl)Fe(CO)2NO complexes with α,β-unsaturated ketones affords 1,6- or 1,5-diketones, respectively. (η3-1-Acetonylallyl)Fe(CO)2NO complexes also react with α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds to give 1,8-dicarbonyl compounds. The mechanisms and reactivity of these conjugate addition reactions are discussed.Key words: Iron; Carbonyl; Allyl; Silicon; Nitrosyl; Ketone
Preparation and Reactivities of (η3-1- and 2-Trimethylsiloxyallyl)Fe(CO2)NO Complexes. Intermediates Functioning as Equivalents of β- and α-Acyl Carbocations and Acyl Carbanions

, p. 2965 - 2977 (2007/10/02)
(η3-1- and 2-Trimethylsiloxyallyl)Fe(CO)2NO complexes were prepared by the reaction of the corresponding siloxyallylic halides with Bu4N.These complexes reacted with both of carbon nucleophiles and carbon electrophiles preferentially at the less hindered sites of the allylic ligands. In these reactions, (η3-1-trimethylsiloxyallyl)Fe(CO)2NO complexes served as synthetically equivalent synthons for both of β-acyl carbocations and β-acyl carbanions and (η3-2-trimethylsiloxyallyl)Fe(CO)2NO complexes as both of α-acyl carbocations and α-acyl carbanions. The stereochemical courses of the reactions are described.
