CdS nanocapsules and nanospheres as efficient solar light-driven photocatalysts for degradation of Congo red dye

Khan, Azam,Zia-ur-Rehman,Rehman, Muneeb-ur-,Khan, Rajwali,Zulfiqar,Waseem, Amir,Iqbal, Azhar,Shah, Zawar Hussain

, p. 33 - 41 (2016)

CdS-1 (nanosphers) and CdS-2 (nanocapsule), were synthesized via green synthetic route without using any toxic surfactants by thermolysis of bis(4-benzhydrylpiperazine-1-carbodithioate-κ2 S, S?)cadmium(II) (1) and bis (4-benzylpipera-zine-1-carbodithioate-κ2 S, S?)cadmium(II) (2), respectively in the presence of ethylenediamine as a solvent. The nanoparticles were characterized by TEM, XRD, SEM, FT-IR UV–Visible and Fluorescence spectroscopy. The TEM results showed the formation of nanospheres (CdS-1) and nanocapsules (CdS-2) from complexes 1 and 2, respectively. Both CdS nanoparticles (NPs) have hexagonal crystal phase and a band gap value in the visible region as confirmed by the XRD and UV–Visible spectra, respectively. The photoluminescence (PL) data revealed that CdS-2 has longer recombination time of photo-injected electron hole pairs than CdS-1. The similar FT-IR spectra for both CdS NPs, and different HOMO-LUMO gap values for complexes {4.8187?eV (1) and CdS-2 4.7504?eV (2)} as predicted by DFT calculations suggest that stability of complexes play a key role in controlling morphology. Furthermore, the visible light driven photocatalytic degradation of Congo red dye was observed higher for nanocapsules than nanospheres due to a longer recombination time of photo-injected electron hole pairs.

Facile photocatalytic reduction of carcinogenic Cr(vi) on Fe-doped copper sulfide nanostructures

Aamir, Asma,Ain, Noor Ul,Nasir, Jamal Abdul,Nayab, Ujala,Rehman, Zia Ur

, p. 27377 - 27386 (2020)

In this study, Fe-doped copper sulfide nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated for the solar-assisted reduction of CrVI ions in raw water. The Fe-doped NPs were synthesized by decomposing copper(ii) N,N-diphenylmethylpiperazinecarbamodithioate via a facile single-step, one-pot solvothermal method in the presence of iron salt. The CrVI photoreduction data were fit to a pseudo-first-order kinetic model and a Langmuir model. The CuS/Cu2S NP reduction ability for CrVI increases with an increase in dopant percentage. The best catalyst (9% Fe-doped) was able to reduce CrVI (10-4 M K2Cr2O7) to CrIII in raw water using an initial amount of 10 mg in 6 min with a reduction efficiency of up to 100%. The photocatalytic activity was examined while varying five different parameters: sunlight, diffused light, change in pH, and changes in the concentration of the catalyst and the temperature. This new approach presents an active, simple, and cost-effective means for wastewater treatment.

Self-assembled heteroleptic Zn(II) dithiocarbamate-based 2d-interwoven supramolecular giant macrocycles and their redox properties

Khan Khattak, Zafar Ali,Zia-Ur-Rehman,Khan, Azam,Shah, Afzal,Zaid, Waqar,Badshah, Amin,Fettouhi, Mohammed,Fazal, Atif

, p. 238 - 244 (2014)

This article presents a new heteroleptic Zn(II) dithiocarbamate (1) having molecules linked together via H...H and π...π interactions to form a giant hexanuclear macrocycle. These macrocycles are connected together through S...H interactions to offer a unique two-dimensional cloth-like interwoven architecture in the solid state. The redox behavior of the complex deposited on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode was investigated in different pH media. The analyte was found to oxidize and reduce in a pH-dependent irreversible manner. On the basis of the electrochemical findings, redox mechanistic pathways were proposed.

Synthesis and biological evaluation of new cholinesterase inhibitors for Alzheimer's disease

Hussein, Weiam,Sa?lik, Begüm Nurpelin,Levent, Serkan,Korkut, Bü?ra,Ilgin, Sinem,?zkay, Yusuf,Kaplancikli, Zafer Asim

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder mostly influencing the elderly, and causes death due to dementia. The main pathogenic feature connected with the progression of this multifactorial disease is the weakening of the cholinergic system in the brain. Cholinesterase (ChE) inhibitors are recognized as one of the choices in the treatment of AD. The inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) were approved as a therapeutic strategy to reduce the symptoms of AD and prevent its progression. The capacity of BChE is not completely known yet; rather, it is accepted to assume a part in a few disorders such as AD. Thus, BChE inhibitors may have a greater role for the treatment of AD in the future. In the present study, 2-(9-acridinylamino)-2-oxoethyl piperazine/piperidine/morpholinecarbodithioate derivatives were synthesized in order to investigate anticholinesterase activity. Eight derivatives demonstrated a specific and promising action against BChE. Furthermore, compound 4n showed inhibitory activity against both enzymes. It was found that the active compounds were well tolerated in the cytotoxicity test. Possible interactions between the lead compound, 4n, and the BChE enzyme were determined through a docking study. The findings obtained within this paper will contribute to the development of new and effective synthetic anti-Alzheimer compounds, and will ideally encourage future screening against AD.

Synthesis and pharmacological evaluation of 2,4-dinitroaryldithiocarbamate derivatives as novel monoacylglycerol lipase inhibitors

Kapanda, Coco N.,Masquelier, Julien,Labar, Geoffray,Muccioli, Giulio G.,Poupaert, Jacques H.,Lambert, Didier M.

scheme or table, p. 5774 - 5783 (2012/07/28)

Monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL) is responsible for signal termination of 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), an endocannabinoid neurotransmitter endowed with several physiological effects. Previously, we showed that the arylthioamide scaffold represents a privileged template for designing MAGL inhibitors. A series of 37 compounds resulting from pharmacomodulations around the arylthioamide template were synthesized and tested to evaluate their inhibitory potential on MAGL activity as well as their selectivity over fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), another endocannabinoid-hydrolyzing enzyme. We have identified 2,4-dinitroaryldithiocarbamate derivatives as a novel class of MAGL inhibitors. Among the synthesized compounds, we identified [2,4-dinitrophenyl-4-(4-tert- butylbenzyl)piperazine-1-carbodithioate] (CK37), as the most potent MAGL inhibitor within this series (IC50 = 154 nM). We have also identified [2,4-dinitrophenyl-4-benzhydrylpiperazine-1-carbodithioate] (CK16) as a selective MAGL inhibitor. These compounds are irreversible MAGL inhibitors that probably act by interacting with Cys208 or Cys242 and Ser122 residues of the enzyme. Moreover, CK37 is able to raise 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) levels in intact cells.
