Reactions of steroidal olefins such as cholest-5-ene (1), its 3β-chloro (2), 3β-hydroxy (3) and 3β-acetoxy (4) analogs with sodium p-toluenesulphinate monohydrate and iodine in dichloromethane at room temperature furnish the corresponding 6-(p-tolylsulphonyl)cholest-5-enes (5-8) and 5-iodo-6β-(p-tolylsulphonyl)-5α-cholestanes (9-12), respectively.Structural identifications have been made on the basis of elemental analysis and spectral data.
