Thermally induced cyclization of electron-rich N-arylthiobenzamides to benzothiazoles

Heating N-(2-methoxyphenyl)benzenecarbothioamides in refluxing nitrobenzene for 24 hours gives the corresponding benzothiazoles with intramolecular ipso substitution of the ortho-methoxy substituent.
