The reactions of 1-hydrazido-6,7-dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (4) with symmetric ketones resulted in imidazoisoquinolin-1-ones 6a, b via the hydrazone intermediates 5a, b.With aromatic aldehydes, 4 gave diastereometric pairs of imidazoisoquinolines 8 and 9a, b.The relative configurations and conformations were determined by means of 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and DNOE experiments.It was found that, depending on the configuration and bulkiness of the C-3 substituents, trans, cis1-A or cis1-B conformations predominate.
