Mass spectrometry of vic-dioximate complexes of nickel, palladium, and platinum

The nickel(II), palladium(II), and platinum(II) complexes formed from dimethylglyoxime, diphenylglyoxime, and α-furildioxime have been studied by positive ion electron-impact mass spectrometry. The molecular ions of every complex are very stable and correspond to the base peak in seven of nine spectra. Usually, the stabilities of the molecular ions are in the sequence Pt > Ni > Pd. The spectra are rather complicated, but ion types and structures of fragment ions correlate well with structures known from the condensed-phase chemistry of the metals. Some ion types are specific to certain complexes, and there are significant differences between the behaviors of the three metals. The most conspicuous trend involves the formation of fragment ions with metal-carbon σ bonds and metal-acetylene bonds. Such ions increase in prominence in the spectra of the metal complexes in the sequence Ni a well-defined dependence on the formal oxidation state of the metal, no doubt reflecting the extensive metal→ligand π bonding that is possible in many fragment ions.

A number of 14- and 16-membered macrocyclic complexes of nickel(II) and cobalt(II) of the type, NiL2(BF2)2 and CoL2(BF2)2*2H2O (LH2 = pentane-2,4-dione dioxime, 1,2-diphenylethane-1,2-dione dioxime or 1,2-difurylethane-1,2-dione dioxime) have been synthesized along with a copper(II) macrocyclic complex CuL2(BF2)2, where L represents the dianion of 1,2-diphenylethane-1,2-dione dioxime.The preparative procedure involves a non-template cyclization of the neutral complexes of cobalt(II), nickel(II) and copper(II) of the corresponding oximes (LH2) by reaction with boron trifluoride.The nickel(II) and cobalt(II) compounds are respectively diamagnetic and of low-spin type having one unpaired electron with a nominal d7-configuration, while the copper(II) complex is square-planar.Spectral data support a square-planar environment about the metal ion, coordination occurring through the nitrogen atoms of the ligands.The complexes are resistant to moderately concentrated acids, dilute alkalis and a variety of organic liquids at ambient temperatures.They exhibit thermal stabilities to varying degrees.
