The C-N bond of tertiary amines was cleaved with a palladium complex as catalyst in the presence of an organic halide and carbon monoxide, and tertiary amides were obtained.

The first iron catalysts able to promote the formal insertion of CO into the C?N bond of amines are reported. Using low-valent iron complexes, including K2[Fe(CO)4], amides are formed from aromatic and aliphatic amines, in the presence of an iodoalkane promoter. Inorganic Lewis acids, such as AlCl3 and Nd(OTf)3, have a positive influence on the catalytic activity of the iron salts, enabling the carbonylation at a low pressure of CO (6 to 8 bars).

An aminolysis reaction between various aryl esters and inert tertiary amines by C-O and C-N bond activations has been developed for the selective synthesis of a broad scope of tertiary amides under neutral and mild conditions. The mechanism may undergo the two key steps of oxidative addition of acyl C-O bond in parent ester and C-N bond cleavage of tertiary amine via an iminium-type intermediate.
