Four novel triphenylamine-based polymers, PJK1, PJK2, PJK3 and PJK4 were successfully synthesized and fully characterized by 1H NMR, UV-VIS spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV), GPC and spectroelectrochemistry. These polymers are easily soluble in many common organic solvents, which make them appropriate for film deposition via spray-coating. We fabricated electrochromic cells comprising ITO-coated glass/polymer/gel electrolyte/ITO-coated glass and patterned the color change by applying direct current with different voltages. We report herein color changes, from the neutral to oxidized form as follows: for PJK1, orange to dark green; for PJK2, light yellow to reddish brown; for PJK3, light blue to grey; and for PJK4, green to bluish green. The majority of the copolymers exhibited very good thermal stabilities, as evidenced by less than a 5% weight loss in temperatures exceeding 400 °C. To further characterize, we simulated the electrochemical and optical properties, which are good agreement with the experimental data.

Two novel macrocycles based on triphenylamine (TPA) have been synthesized by McMurry coupling reactions. The cyclic compound 2 consisted of two triphenylamines linked with ethylene bridges bearing two n-butyl chains. The compound 3 was based on N,N,N′,N′-tetraphenylbenzidine (TPD) units with macrocyclic architecture. They were fully characterized by cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis absorption and self-assembly properties. The crystal structure of 2 was determined by X-ray analysis. Atomic force microscope and scanning electron microscope images showed that compound 3 could form interesting fiber-like nanostructures by self-assembly. Both of the compounds can be used as active layers for p-type OFETs. The OFET device based on 2 prepared via a vacuum-deposit method gave a mobility of 2.3 × 10 -3 cm2 V-1 s-1 and a current on/off ratio of 105. High quality thin films of 3 were fabricated by spin coating from solution, and gave a mobility of 2.0 × 10-3 cm2 V-1 s-1 with a current on/off ratio of 2 × 105. The results showed that the TPA derivatives with cyclic structures might fit better for OFETs. They may provide promising new choices for organic semiconductors. The Royal Society of Chemistry 2007.

Strong enhancement of the two-photon absorption of organic molecules near silver nanoparticle fractal clusters has been observed and has been exploited to yield composite materials with very strong two-photon absorption and two-photon-excited fluorescence properties. Measurements on cluster films coated with chromophoric polymer or with thiol-bound chromophores give spatially-averaged enhancements of 1000 and 20000, respectively. Two-photon fluorescence microscopy studies show that the enhancements are spatially inhomogeneous, with peak-enhancement factors of a?¥ 10000 (polymer/cluster) and a?¥ 160000 (thiol chromophore/cluster), and excitation frequency dependent. These results are in accord with theoretical predictions of local-field effects due to strong localization of collective plasmon modes in fractal metal clusters, and demonstrate an approach to ultrasensitive two-photon processes.
