The acidic methylene reagents 1a-e react with phenyl isothiocyanate followed by reaction with bromomalononitrile to afford acyclic and cyclic products 3,4,8,9 and 14a-c depending on the nature of the active methylene reagent used.The reactivions of the products towards different chemical reagents to afford thiophene, pyrazole, oxazole and pyrimidine derivatives were studied.
