Compounds of the formula (I): wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, p, q, and n are as defined within and a pharmaceutically acceptable salts and in vivo hydrolysable esters are described. Preparation of nitrogen-containing 15-membered triolefinic macrocycles: (E,E,E)-1,6,11-tris(arylsulfonyl)-1,6,11-triazacyclopentadeca-3,8,13-trienes

Three routes to (E,E,E)-1,6,11-tris(arylsulfonyl)-1,6,11-triazacyclopentadeca-3,8,13-trienes are described. Optimization of the preparation of key intermediates has opened the way to efficient synthesis of a broad variety of 15-membered, nitrogen-containing triolefinic macrocycles.
