One for all: The 2,8-dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octane derivative 1 served as a general building block for the bioactive title compounds (see scheme; Bz=benzoyl, Bn=benzyl). Two chemoselective alkynylations and two ruthenium-catalyzed hydrogenations had key roles in the first total synthesis of zaragozic acidD, a potent ras-farnesyl protein transferase inhibitor.
