The reaction of the copper(II) complex n with triphenylphosphine yields three different modes of incorporation of TCNE radical anion into the products Cu(TCNE)(PPh3)3 1, n 2 and 3.In 1, the TCNE radical anion is N-bound; in 2, trans-N-bound TCNE radical anion bridges alternate with CN bridges to produce a polymeric structure, and in 3 the TCNE radical anion is un-coordinated.
