2-Phenoxypyridine and 2-phenylsulfanylpyridine are cyclopalladated readily by palladium acetate to give six-membered metallocycles. Extension to the three isomeric bis(2-pyridyloxy)benzenes leads to a new series of doubly-cyclopalladated compounds. In contrast, 3-6-diphenoxypyridazine and 4-6-diphenoxypyrimidine only undergo monopalladation, whilst their sulfur analogues are resistant to cyclopalladation. All cyclometallated compounds are converted to their acetylacetonate derivatives and the X-ray crystal structure of one of these is described.
