Reactions of (o-acyloxyphenyl)acetone with phenyl- and p-tolylhydrazines in boiling ethylene glycol and with ethylhydrazine in boiling ethylene glycol-acetic acid mixture afford 1,5-disubstituted 4-(o-hydroxyphenyl)-3-methylpyrazoles, whereas their reactions with phenyl and p-tolylhydrazines in formic acid yield 2-methyl-3-(o-acyloxyphenyl)indoles.
