Synthesis of naturally occurring 7,8,4'-Trihydroxy-6-methoxyisoflavone

The title isoflavone (6) has been synthesised from 3,4-dibenzyloxy-2-hydroxyacetophenone (1) by the following steps: persulphate oxidation to 2, partial methylation to 3, its condensation with p-benzyloxybenzaldehyde (4) to chalcone 5, oxidation with thallium(III) nitrate in methanol and subsequent treatment with hydrochloric acid.Its identity has been determined by comparison of its characterization data (melting point, TLC, UV and acetate formation) with those of the natural compound.
