Condensation of 2-(3-aminonaphth-2-yl)benzimidazole (2) with aldehydes in 1:1 molar proportions in hot acetic acid yields 6,7-dihydro-6-substituted benzimidazobenzoquinazolines (3).Dehydrogenation of 3 using potassium permanganate in acetone leads to 6-substituted benzimidazobenzoquinazolines (5).All the compounds have been characterized by spectral (mass, IR and 1H NMR) and microanalytical data.
