Selective reduction strategies based on abundant-metal catalysts are very important in the production of chemicals. In this paper, a method for the electrochemical semihydrogenation and semideuteration of alkynes to form Z-alkenes was developed, using a simple nickel foam as catalyst and H3O+ or D3O+ as sources of hydrogen or deuterium. Good yields and excellent stereoselectivities (Z/E up to 20 : 1) were obtained under very mild reaction conditions. The reaction proceeded with terminal and nonterminal alkynes, and also with alkynes containing easily reducible functional groups, such as carbonyl groups, as well as aryl chlorides, bromides, and even iodides. The nickel-foam electrocatalyst could be recycled up to 14 times without any change in its catalytic properties.

, p. 698 - 702 (2019/01/04)
Calcium-phyllosilicates can successfully be used as novel bases in the Matsuda-Heck reaction using methanol as solvent. The new experimental set-up distinguishes itself by higher reactivity and better selectivity compared to other systems.

Photoactivation of photosensitisers can be utilised to elicit the production of ROS, for potential therapeutic applications, including the destruction of diseased tissues and tumours. A novel class of photosensitiser, exemplified by DC324, has been designed possessing a modular, low molecular weight and 'drug-like' structure which is bioavailable and can be photoactivated by UV-A/405 nm or corresponding two-photon absorption of near-IR (800 nm) light, resulting in powerful cytotoxic activity, ostensibly through the production of ROS in a cellular environment. A variety of in vitro cellular assays confirmed ROS formation and in vivo cytotoxic activity was exemplified via irradiation and subsequent targeted destruction of specific areas of a zebrafish embryo.
Multibond Forming Tandem Reactions of Anilines via Stable Aryl Diazonium Salts: One-Pot Synthesis of 3,4-Dihydroquinolin-2-ones
Faggyas, Réka J.,Grace, Megan,Williams, Lewis,Sutherland, Andrew
, p. 12595 - 12608 (2018/10/15)
A fast and effective one-pot tandem process that generates Heck coupled products from readily available anilines via stable aryl diazonium tosylate salts was developed. The mild and simple procedure involves rapid formation of aryl diazonium salts using a polymer-supported nitrite reagent and p-tosic acid, followed by a base-free Heck-Matsuda coupling with acrylates and styrenes. Using 2-nitroanilines as substrates, the one-pot tandem process was extended for the direct synthesis of 3,4-dihydroquinolin-2-ones. In this case, following diazotization and Heck-Matsuda coupling to give methyl cinnamates, addition of hydrogen and reutilization of the palladium catalyst for reduction of the nitro group and hydrogenation of the alkene resulted in efficient formation of 3,4-dihydroquinolin-2-ones. The synthetic utility of this one-pot, four-stage process was demonstrated with the five-pot synthesis of a quinolinone-based sodium ion channel modulator.

The invention provides methods for treating an individual having a retinoid responsive disorder. In one embodiment, a method involves administering to the individual an effective amount of a selective CYP26B inhibitor, the selective CYP26B inhibitor having at least 10-fold selectivity for CYP26B relative to CYP26A. In another embodiment, a method involves administering to the individual an effective amount of a selective CYP26A inhibitor, the selective CYP26A inhibitor having a chemical formula set forth in the specification. The invention further provides screening methods for identifying a selective CYP26A inhibitor or selective CYP26B inhibitor.

Investigation of the behavior of arenediazonium salts with olefins in BmimPF6
Kabalka, George W.,Dong, Gang,Venkataiah, Bollu
, p. 2775 - 2777 (2007/10/03)
The palladium-catalyzed reactions of olefins with arenediazonium salts in ionic liquids were investigated. For methyl acrylate and methyl acrylonitrile, normal Heck cross-coupling products are obtained in good yields. However, highly selective dimerization products are formed in excellent yields for styrenes. The catalyst system can be recycled.
