Novel synthesis of 1,1,1,4,4,4-hexamethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)tetrasilane

The reaction PbCl2 with (THF)3Li[Si(SiMe3)3] in Et2O at -78°C produced (Me3Si)3SiSi(SiMe3)3 (I) in quantitative yield. The product was identified by comparison of its physical properties with published values; its structure was established by X-ray crystallography. Two possible mechanisms for the formation of the octasilane are discussed.
