Condensation of 2-arylidene-1,3-indandiones with some Michael donors and phenols

The Michael condensation of 2-benzylidene-1,3-indandione (1) with nitromethane gave the 1:2 adduct 2. Whereas, with acetylacetone it afforded a mixture of the 1:2 adduct 3 and either 4 or 5. Condensation of 2-(o-hydroxybenzylidene)-1,3-indandione (6) with EAA lead to 8. The polycyclic compounds 10 and 12 were obtained from 6 and acetylacetone or ethyl cyanoacetate respectively. The Michael condensation was extended further using resorcinol and phloroglucinol as donors to give 16-19. Compounds 16 and 18 were cyclized to afford 20 and 21 respectively.
