Synthesis of methyl 4-O--β-D-mannopyranoside, a trisaccharide analog related to the repeating unit of the antigen from Klebsiella Type-2

Methyl 3-O-allyl-2,6-di-O-benzyl-β-D-mannopyranoside (7) has been synthesised from D-glucose.This synthon has been allowed to react with ethyl 2,3,6,2',3',4',6'-hepta-O-acetyl-1-thio-β-matopyranoside (9) using methyl triflate as promoter.Removal of protecting groups from the product affords methyl 4-O--β-D-mannopyranoside (12).The structure of 12 has een confirmed by its 1H and 13C NMR spectral data.
