In reactions of diphenylphosphine with aromatic o-hydroxy aldehydes (salicyladehyde and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthalenecarbaldehyde), intially formed α-hydroxyalkylphosphines enter into ester interchange with a phenylenediboronic ester to give diphosphines: 2,2'-p-phenylene bis[4-(diphenylphosphino)-1,3,2-benzodioxaborinane] and 2,2'-p-phenylene bis[4-(diphenylphosphino)-4H-1,3-dioxa-2-boraphenanthrene]. Successive reactions of diphenylphosphine, salicyladehyde, and tert-butylboronic acid anhydride yielded 2-tert-butyl-4(diphenylphosphinoyl)4H-1,3-dioxa-2-boraphenanthrene.
