PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a condensed polycyclic aromatic compound having excellent thermal stability and excellent solubility. SOLUTION: A condensed polycyclic aromatic compound is represented by the general formula (1) (where one of R1 and R2 represents an aryl group and the other represents a hydrogen atom, one of R3 and R4 represents a C1-C4 alkyl group and the other represents a hydrogen atom, and X1 and X2 independently represent a sulfur atom, a selenium atom, or a tellurium atom). PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient production method of a 2,7-substituted [1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene derivative which is extremely useful as an organic semiconductor and has mutually different substituents, of which the efficient production method has been unknown. SOLUTION: The problem is solved by halogenating benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene, subsequently conducting a coupling reaction, and further conducting an acylation reaction and subsequently conducting a reduction reaction.
