It is a colorless, volatile, and flammable liquid with a strong, fishy odor. Methanaminium, N,N-dimethyl-, methylide is a quaternary ammonium compound, which means it has a positively charged nitrogen atom surrounded by four alkyl groups. Methanaminium, N,N-dimethyl-, methylide is widely used in various applications, including as a reagent in organic synthesis, a phase-transfer catalyst, and a precursor for the production of other chemicals. It is also found in nature as a byproduct of the decomposition of proteins and is a component of the vapors released by certain types of fish, which contributes to their characteristic smell.
