The condensation of pentafluorophenylhydrazine with oxobutanedioic esters stops at noncyclic compounds, which exist in the crystalline state as enehydrazines and in solution as hydrazone tautomers. The latter represent an equilibrium mixture of rotational forms, in which the EE"E" stereoisomer predominates. The reaction of pentafluorophenylhydrazine with β-diketones (benzoylacetone, dibenzoylmethane, 4-phenyl-2,4-butanedioic esters) leads to the formation of the corresponding pyrazoles.
