Multifold photocyclization reactions of styrylcalix[4]arenes

A photochemical transannular [2+2] cycloaddition reaction is the main reaction pathway for 1,3-substituted styrylcalix[4]arenes, whereas 1,2-distyrylcalix[4]arenes give calix[4]diphenanthrenes. Oxidative cyclization to phenanthrenes and the transannular [2+2] cycloaddition reaction are observed as competing processes during the photolysis of distyryl- and tetrastyryl-substituted calix[4]arenes.
