Synthesis and biological activity of certain 1-substituted-4-benzylidene-2-phenyl-5-imidazolones

A novel series of 1-substituted-4-benzylidene-2-phenyl-5-imidazolone derivatives were synthesized for their potential biological activity. The synthesis involved the base and acid catalyzed reactions of azide 3 and/or acid chloride 2. Compounds 5c and 5d were easily cyclized to give 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives 6a and 6b. Representative examples for internal Friedel-Crafts and [4 + 2] cycloaddition were also investigated.
