The invention discloses a nilotinib oxidation degradation impurity namely 4-methyl-3-[4-(3-pyridyl)-2-pyrimidinyl]amido-N-[5-(3-oxo-4-methyl-1H-imidazole-1-yl)-3-(trifluoromethy)phenyl]benzamide (I) and a preparation method thereof. The preparation method comprises the following steps: taking 3-(4-methyl-1H-1-imidazolyl)-5-trifluoromethyl aniline as the raw material, carrying out amino protection, oxidation, and hydrolysis de-protection to obtain 3-(3-oxo-4-methyl-1H-1-imidazolyl)-5-trifluoromethyl aniline, and carrying out condensation reactions between 3-(3-oxo-4-methyl-1H-1-imidazolyl)-5-trifluoromethyl aniline and 4-methyl-3-[[4-(3-pyridyl)-2-pyrimidyl]amido]benzoic acid to obtain the nilotinib oxidation degradation impurity (I).
