Quantitative Synthesis of (C6H5)2AsF2(1+)*AsF6(1-) and (C6H5)2AsF3 via Interaction of Benzene with Arsenic Pentafluoride

Benzene reacts quantitatively with AsF5 to give (C6H5)2AsF2(1+)*AsF6(1-), the first reported aryl or alkyl fluoroarsonium(V) salt.This reacts quantitatively with CsF to give (C6H5)2AsF3 and CsAsF6.Interaction of (C6H5)2AsF3 with AsF5 reconstitutes the fluoroarsonium salt.Variable temperature 19F NMR studies show (C6H5)2AsF3 to be a rigid trigonal bipyramid, with the phenyl groups in equatorial positions. - Keywords: Arylfluoroarsonium, Arsenic, Benzene, Substitution
