Thiamphenicol is a synthetic antibiotic belonging to the aminoglycoside class, which is chemically similar to chloramphenicol. It is primarily used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including respiratory, urinary tract, and skin infections, as well as meningitis and septicemia. Thiamphenicol works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, thereby preventing the growth and reproduction of bacteria. It is administered orally or parenterally and has a broad-spectrum activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. However, due to its potential side effects, such as allergic reactions and the risk of causing Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, its use is generally limited to cases where other antibiotics are not suitable or have failed.
