Phase-transfer C-alkylation of ethyl diphenylphosphinoylacetate by primary alkyl halides with and without a solvent in the presence of K2CO3 and Cs2CO3 as bases gives exclusively monoalkylated products.Terminal dihalides and oligoethylene glycol bis(p-toluenesulfonates) form products of both mono- and cycloalkylation, as well as diphosphinoyl compounds, depending on the length of the hydrocarbon or oligoether chain and the reactant ratio. In all the cases studied, addition of Cs2CO3 substantially accelerates the reaction.
