It is a derivative of benzylamine, where two hydrogen atoms are replaced by a methyl group and an iodine atom is attached as a counterion. Benzenemethanaminium, N,N-dimethyl-N-phenyl-, iodide is a white crystalline solid and is soluble in water and organic solvents. It is used as a reagent in organic synthesis, particularly in the preparation of various pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Due to its cationic nature, it can also be used as a phase-transfer catalyst in certain chemical reactions.
