A phthalimide represented by general formula (I): wherein L represents L-1 or L-2: (wherein R1and R2each independently represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, etc.); A represents an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom or —NR5— (wherein R5is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, etc.); R represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, a cycloalkyl group, a phenyl group, etc.; X represents a halogen atom; Y represents a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom; and Z represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, a haloalkyl group or a halogen atom. The compound exhibits excellent herbicidal effects with high selectivity.
