The detection and estimation of thiols is an important procedure in environmental and biochemical investigations. One way in which this may be achieved is to use a fluorogenic reagent whose fluorescence changes upon reaction with a thiol. The usual reactive centres in such reagents are maleimide or iodoacetate. Reagents of this type usually have the reactive maleimide group directly attached to an aromatic ring of the fluorophore, i.e. the reagent is an N-arylmaleimide. However, recently some reagents having alkyl chains as a spacer between the fluorophore and the thiol reactive group have been prepared.
