Cationic 1,2,4-triazolium azo dyes prepared by alkylation of the neutral azo precursor consist of two isomers, a major bluish-red isomer and a minor yellowish-red isomer.P.m.r. and electronic absorption spectra, in conjunction with alternative syntheses of the dye from preformed 1-N-methyl and 4-N-methyltriazolo dye bases established that the major bluish-red component is the 2,4-isomer, and the minor yellowish-red component the 1,4-isomer.
