Carbon suboxide reacts with alkylaluminium compounds, yielding di- and tricarboaluminated derivatives, depending on the ratio of the reactants. The formation of a =C=C=O--AlR3 intermediate appears to be the first step of the reaction. The hydrolysis of the reaction products gives 2,4-pentanedione and mesityloxide from trimethylaluminium, and 3,5-heptanedione and 5-ethyl-4-hepten-3-one from triethylaluminium.Trimethylboron, trimethylsilane and tetramethyltin are unreactive, while diethylzinc catalyzes the polymerization of carbon suboxide.
