Complexation of achiral pillar[5]arenes with chiral amines induced strong circular dichroism (CD) signals. The CD responses differed drastically depending on the nature of the amino acid guest, and they significantly varied and part of them even inverted, upon increasing the length of the alkyl chains of the pillar[5]arenes guests. Accordingly, this tactic allowed for the unprecedented simultaneous enantiomeric and structural differentiation of α-amino esters with homologous molecular hosts.

Targeted synthesis of piezoresponsive small molecules and in-depth understanding of their mechanism is of utmost importance for the development of smart devices. This work reports the synthesis, structure and piezosensitivity of a bola-amphiphile 1,4-bis(pentyloxy)-2,5-bis(2-pyridineethynyl)-benzene (C5-PPB). Depending on the rate of compression, two different phases in C5-PPB can be generated. The ambient-pressure α-phase is stable up to 0.8 GPa, beyond which it undergoes an isostructural transformation to β-phase, accompanied by a clearly visible elongation of the crystal. This α-to-β phase transition requires the sample to be compressed slowly. When quickly compressed, phase α persists to about 1.5 GPa, beyond which its amorphization starts, accompanied by the appearance of irregular grooves on the largest faces. Mechanical pressure also affects the optical property of C5-PPB, which shows reversible mechanochromism with a green to cyan transformation in the emission, associated with a 15 nm shift in the maxima. The conductivity of C5-PPB as a direct outcome of its crystal packing has also been studied.

We report the design and synthesis of two Co2+ and Zn2+ phthalocyanine (PC)-based redox active metal-organic conjugated microporous polymers (MO-CMP), CoCMP and ZnCMP, respectively, obtained by a Schiff base condensation reaction. CoCMP, where Co2+ is stabilized by N4-coordination of PC, has shown stable and efficient electrocatalytic activity towards the OER with a low overpotential of 340 mV.

We present the synthesis and characterization of porous interpenetrated zirconium-organic frameworks (PIZOFs), a new family of metal-organic frameworks obtained from ZrCl4 and the rodlike dicarboxylic acids HO 2C[PE-P(R1,R2)-EP]CO2H that consist of alternating phenylene (P) and ethynylene (E) units. The substituents R 1,R2 were broadly varied (alkyl, Oalkyl, oligo(ethylene glycol)), including postsynthetically addressable substituents (amino, alkyne, furan). The PIZOF structure is highly tolerant towards the variation of R 1 and R2. This together with the modular synthesis of the diacids offers a facile tuning of the chemical environment within the pores. The PIZOF structure was solved from single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The PIZOFs are stable under ambient conditions. PIZOF-2, the PIZOF prepared from HO2C[PE-P(OMe,OMe)-EP]CO2H, served as a prototype to determine thermal stability and porosity. It is stable up to 325°C in air as determined by using thermogravimetry and powder X-ray diffraction. Argon sorption isotherms on PIZOF-2 revealed a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 1250 m2 g-1 and a total pore volume of 0.68 cm3 g-1. Copyright
